How to Make {Easy Detox} Green Juice

Should I get a juicer? I get this question a lot so I wanted to write this post to refer my clients to and for anyone else who is wanting to dust off their juicer or perhaps purchase a new one.

Juicers separate the pulp from the juice and we drink the juice only.

When we juice green vegetables, we liberate the chlorophyll and our bodies immediately absorb it (this does not happen when blending because the fiber remains in tact).  Chlorophyll is a detoxifier and an incredible healer of inner and topical inflammation and wounds.  The chlorophyll remakes our blood.  It is centered on magnesium and our blood is centered on iron.

Chlorophyll is a neutralizer of toxins and can deal with anything you have.  It is good for kidney, heart and liver conditions. Green juice is an amazing detoxifier. {You need to be careful to use simple juices if you are on a lot of medication.  If you are very sick, you will probably release toxins very quickly.  This will happen in the form of bowel movements & sometimes your liver dumps a lot of toxins}

So juicing rocks for the above reasons, but one of the things I dislike about it is how spendy it can be {especially when you use all organic produce which I highly recommend}. I use the recipe below to ‘cheapen the deal’ if you will & drink organic green juice all week long for under $20.

{Easy Detox} Green Juice

  •  4 romaine lettuce leaves
  • 2 large kale leaves
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 green apples

Wash all the produce and then individually place through the juicer. This recipe only makes one serving. Try to drink the juice immediately to get all of the benefits. If you have to save it for later then place it in an airtight container for no more than a day. Don’t forget to clean your juicer right away- it’s such a pain in the butt if you wait until later when everything is super stuck on.

Pricing: (obviously will vary at your local store, but you get the idea) A bunch of organic romaine lettuce (8-10 leaves) $1.99, a bunch of organic kale (4-8 leaves) $1.99, one large organic cucumber $1.00 (or 2 small Persian cucumbers), 2 organic green apples (bag of 10 for $4.99).

5 Days worth of Easy Green Detox Juice {Shopping List/Cost}:

3 bunches or romaine lettuce = $1.99 X 3 = $5.97
2 bunches of kale = $1.99 x 2 = $3.98
5 cucumbers $1 x 5 = $5.00
1 bag of green apples = $4.99
TOTAL: $19.94

So I know there are other ways to make green juice & some might be even cheaper, but this is just one way I like to do it and wanted to share! Once you fall in love with green juice you can play around with it a little. Maye use just one apple, just 1/2 cucumber, or sub spinach for the kale etc. Find your favorite blend & rock out with it.

I don’t recommend juice fasts. This is because in my experience I have seen them do more harm then good. For an easy 5-day detox (aka oil change for the body), I recommend drinking the above green juice + eating a primarily vegan diet (lots of fruits and vegetables, some nuts/beans/grains, no dairy/gluten/processed foods and only sugar from fruit. Once you have detoxed for 5 days- then slowly add back in some meats (if you are a protein/meat lover) and just listen to your body to see what else it needs. Be careful not to detox then retox! Keep it clean yo!

Looking for an easy to use & fairly cheap juicer? I have this one –>  & love it! Nothing fancy, but gets the job done.

The Bigger Better Deal is YOU

I need to lose weight before I start dating. I need to buy new shoes before I start running. I need to get a new outfit before I meet with my girlfriends. I need to get in better shape before I start a boot camp. I need to have more money before I start following my dreams. I need my parent’s approval before I choose a new career.  Why do we always do that? Why do we believe we are not good enough right now- as is? The truth is WE ARE. We are perfect just the way we are. We have everything we need to succeed. We are determined and we deserve to live the life of our dreams. We really CAN have it all! Wondering how? Just start. Start now. Start from where you are with what you have. Don’t wait. All that waiting around gets to your head. You start doubting yourself- not enough experience, not enough money, not the nicest equipment, not the best body. SECRET: All you have to do is change your mind about it all.

Change Your Thoughts & Change Your World

Instead of waiting for a bigger house- think of all the benefits of having a smaller one (less to clean, cheaper mortgage, less yard work). Instead of dieting and stressing out about weight loss- LIVE NOW. Go dancing. Go on a date. Love your body exactly as it is and highlight your finest asset (strong thighs, toned arms, flat tummy). Just the act of releasing this body hatred will allow you to stress less and lose weight more effortlessly.  You are enough. You really are. Maybe you just needed a reminder. I did. A year ago, I was caught up in thought patterns were not serving me. I was feeling sorry for myself and my situation. I was always thinking about what I don’t have and what I wanted more of. I was extremely unhappy. Moving didn’t help. Buying new clothes didn’t help. Buying a new car didn’t help. Getting a new job didn’t help. Even seeing a therapist didn’t help. It wasn’t until I flipped everything in my life upside down and started living for ME that things really changed. I realized I had the freedom to choose. I chose happiness. I chose gratitude. I chose light. I chose love. Fast forward to today and I am in bliss! I love my life exactly as it is. I feel like the luckiest person in the world. I wasted years waiting around for “the bigger better deal” not realizing my grass was already the greenest of them all. I don’t want you to waste years like I did. I know it’s hard, but you can do it. Break free of those thoughts that are no longer serving you. Wait no more. You are enough. START NOW.

15 Steps to Better Digestion

Digestive health can be easily changed with simple lifestyle adjustments.

Do you have constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea or heartburn?
If you answered yes to any of the above mentioned troubles there are simple ways to start changing how you are feeling.

Simple Changes

  1. More fruit and vegetables, less red meat.
  2. More whole foods, less processed foods. –> need help with this? Check out my Clean Eating Boot Camp!
  3. Drink freshly squeezed lemons in spring or filtered water. This is alkalizing and helps to clean the stomach of any residual debris.
  4. Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.  Listen to your body.
  5. Eat more fiber (#1)
  6. Skip the NSAID’s/non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.  Regular use of these drugs can cause peptic ulcers in the digestive tract.
  7. Be careful of use and overuse of other drugs that create digestive problems.  Too many antibiotics can strip your gut of good bacteria and you can end up with c-difficile.
  8. Don’t overeat.
  9. Use herbs for digestion.
  10. Drink your liquids before and after meals, not during.
  11. Take your time and really chew-chew-chew.  Your body can use energy for other things if you chew your food instead of relying on acid and enzymes.
  12. Eat slower so you do not swallow a lot of air while you eat.
  13. Do all of the above and skip the laxatives, as your body becomes reliant on them and they are habit forming.
  14. Smoking and drinking can cause ulcers and heartburn.
  15. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of a specialist (gastroenterologist). You may want to get a referral from a friend or relative.  Remember that they are there to diagnose and treat, prevention lies in your hands.

OMG. You love yourself? That’s just weird.

True. It feels weird to say it, especially out loud. We are afraid of being judged or being thought of as selfish or narcissistic. BUT, would you rather be thought of as exhausted, over-worked, frustrated, unhappy or irritable? I would venture to guess there have been times in your life when you have not been the best version of YOU. Perhaps you have found yourself becoming easily frustrated in your role as a mother, sister, daughter, wife, girlfriend or friend. In my case, it’s always a day like any other- the usual routine of helping my son get ready for school and BAM! I am super annoyed at how long it’s taking him to get dressed. Then I get in the car and EVERYONE is driving like an a-hole. Weirdly, I had the same exact routine the day before and felt fine- not annoyed at all. What’s happening? Am I a bad mother? Am I an impatient person? NO, I just need some self-lovin’!! You see, when we put off our own self-care and GIVE GIVE GIVE all our energy to others; we are left depleted and cranky. It never fails. The second after I snap or lose my patience easily I know- it’s time to spend time loving ME. Sometimes my husband will politely ask “are you planning to go to yoga today?” Thanks honey, I get the hint. You might be thinking- it all sounds great, but I don’t have time. My answer to this problem: ask for help. You don’t need to do it all. Give tasks away and clear some time in your schedule for YOU. I hear it over & over- I really want to work out, but I just can’t get away. Look, it’s just one hour (or less depending on the self-care task you choose). You can make this happen I know you can. You NEED to! And you will be a better mother, sister, daughter, wife, girlfriend or friend for it. Seriously, your family will start begging you to go do whatever it is you do when you ‘love yourself’ because they will notice a big change in you. After all, they DO want you to be happy. You deserve to be happy. IT IS NOT SELFISH OR WEIRD TO LOVE YOURSELF. It’s essential.

Not sure how to get started? Keep an eye out for my upcoming ‘Love Yourself’ challenge in February- last year’s was a hit + it might be just the push you need to finally give yourself the love & attention you deserve.

How to Avoid a Resolution One Night Stand

SO, I can’t help but be a little overwhelmed by all the resolution talk! Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that this year is worse than ever with all the talk about setting goals/resolutions and having expectations for grand things to happen. Don’t get me wrong, I too beleive that 2014 will be amazing, but I also know that I will have to work hard to make it that way. I am speaking from experience when I say that New Year’s goals are so sparkly and fun in January, hanging on by a thread in February and then by March I’m like “what resolution?” I’m not proud of it, but I have a feeling that this might be your story too. SO why do we keep having a one night stand with our New Year’s resolutions? Is it because we don’t want them badly enough? NO, I really want mine every year. It is because we chose too many resolutions and can’t focus? No, sometimes I just choose one. Well what the heck is the deal then!?

I honestly think we are just too busy. Unless we can give ALL our attention to the area we want to see a change in (and focus on it for at least 30 days to create a new habit) then we are just setting ourselves up for failure. This year I have decided to do something different. I have decided to choose JUST ONE WORD for 2014. I will use this one word to navigate through my entire year. If a big decision arises then I will refer to my word. If I’m going through a hardship then I will refer to my word. I will cultivate change in my life and it will all revolve around my ONE WORD. This is an amazing opportunity to manifest the very specific type of year YOU want to have. It’s all in the word you choose. I got this idea from this website –>

It’s okay to want to be a better you, and the New Year is a natural time to start. The question is, how? My ‘One Word’ replaces broken promises with a vision for real change. When you choose a single word, you have a clarity and focus. You are moving toward the future rather than swearing off the past.
There you have it! Want to join the un-resolution? Leave a comment with your ONE WORD & let the awesome begin! My Word?

Skoop: Get Your Super On!

Some of you already know that I am SUPER picky about what I put in my body. I read ingredient labels for a living and will not recommend any products with shady business practices and/or suspect ingredients. SO, basically I rarely recommend or get behind any food brands or supplements. BUT, on that rare occasion when I find something I LOVE- I must share. This is it! A seriously amazing product that I DO support!

Introducing SKOOPSkoop_Biz_BackLines

Okay, I admit it. I am a Superfood junkie, but let me tell you why! Our minds and bodies flourish under the influence of plant-based Superfoods. They’re rich in antioxidants, probiotics and adaptogenic herbs that reduce inflammation and acidic build-up, give you all-day energy and resilience, and supercharge your immune system’s ability to fight disease. Skoop is not a meal replacement, but rather a good choice ‘kick-starter’ for your day. Most Americans don’t get a full ‘packet of nutrition’ which means our bodies think we are never quite full. So we graze and graze (mostly on processed foods) which leads to weight gain. If you start your day with Skoop – you will be taking on the day by taking in something speedy and wholesome- this alone raises the health bar. Easy peasy & just my style.

Skoop is plant based, free of gluten and GMO’s plus packed with with 41 plant-based ingredients that have been thoughtfully selected, harvested, and blended to work synergistically with each other and you!

Have you ever wondered what THREE pounds of vegetables looks like?

Here is one version —>

Now imagine having this for breakfast. Not that appealing if you ask me. But one little scoop of Skoop has the equivalent of this and can get your day off to a great start!

Skoop can be enjoyed several ways, but my favorites are in my oatmeal & in my almond milk. SO easy.

Skoop even comes in handy dandy packets. Perfect for traveling or when you are on the go!
